Smaug animated

"You have nice manners for a thief, and a liar."Smaug in the 1977 Rankin/Bass animated film.

Smaug is a character from the 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit by English author J.R.R Tolkien and is the primary antagonist of the story.

He is one of Tolkien's three main antagonists alongside Sauron in The Lord of the Rings (1954) and its respective stories The Fellowship of the Ring (1954), The Two Towers (1954) and The Return of the King (1955) and Morgoth/Melkor in The Silmarillion published in 1977, four years after Tolkien's death alongside numerous other works by Tolkien.

In adaptations of The Hobbit, Smaug was voiced by the late Richard Boone in the 1977 Rankin/Bass adaptation and by Benedict Cumberbatch in Peter Jackson's film trilogy particularly in The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies (he does not appear in An Unexpected Journey and even when he does, not much is seen of him).

Description

Smaug

"I am fire! I am...DEATH!" Smaug on his way to destroy Laketown in the final moments of The Desolation of Smaug, the second film in the Hobbit trilogy by Peter Jackson.

He is a powerful, fearsome dragon who invaded the Dwarf kingdom of Erebor 150 years prior to the events of The Hobbit. Aided by the wizard Gandalf and the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, a group of 13 dwarves mount a quest to take back their kingdom.

Upon reaching Erebor, the Dwarves send Bilbo into Smaug's lair to retrieve the Arkenstone, the jeweled emblem of Thrór's kingdom. Smaug sensed Bilbo's presence immediately, even though Bilbo had rendered himself invisible with the One Ring, and accused the Hobbit of trying to steal from him.

Centuries spent sleeping atop his gold hoard had caused gold and gemstones to become embedded in the skin of Smaug's underside, augmenting the already impenetrable scales that covered most of his body.

Bilbo detected a small bare patch in Smaug's armor, however, and imparted the information to a thrush to give to Bard the Bowman, leader of Laketown. Moments later, Bilbo escaped with the Arkenstone as Smaug flew out of his lair to attack Laketown. The thrush arrived in time to tell Bard of Smaug's weakness, and Bard fired a black arrow into Smaug's wound, killing him.

University Challenge theme intro

The theme for University Challenge. Smaug is the answer to a question in a sketch of this.

Smaug does not appear in any literature made by the wiki founder but his name is used as the basis of a space monster and "chimera dinosaur" known as the Smaugosaurus that appears as the main antagonist in the feature story for the World War X series, King of the Dinosaurs and is the last antagonist faced by the Space Fleet. Smaug is also one of five animals to appear on this wiki alongside Bounder, Ranger, Scarface and Lady Blue.

Even though he does not appear, Smaug appears in two British game show sketches. In the first which is a sketch of The Chase, he is an option alongside Ancalagon the Black and Glaurung for the question of "Which dragon by J.R.R Tolkien does NOT have wings?" (the answer is Glaurung). In the second sketch which is a sketch of University Challenge, Smaug is the answer to one of Emmanuel College, Cambridge's bonus questions along with the Witch King of Angmar.

In the sketch, Emmanuel are given three quotes from Tolkien's The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and answer as to who says the line; in the case of Smaug, his quote is:

"My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws, spears, the shock of my tail is a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane and my breath, death!"
