Kierra Hastings is a character from the Surgeon stories. She is a member of a group of students who are fighting the Great Intelligence in the story The Yeti Factor and with her students, Kierra makes a return in The Mammal Wars.

She is a twenty one year old British woman with fair skin, black hair and green eyes. Unlike fellow students and some of her allies who either wear Chelsea boots in the case of her sub leader and a few others or trainers in the case of two students with the Great Intelligence, Clarissa Wainwright and Eleanor Davidson, Kierra wears boots like the ones worn by Abigail Huntsman, her true leader. Kierra's other clothing consists of black leggings, and a cream-grey top.

Like many of the other students, Kierra is shown to be highly disciplined and obedient as she is regularly shown carrying out her orders with military precision. She is also shown to be a very firm character as shown when she is introduced to the Surgeon and Ghazal by her sub-leader when she stamps her feet together very firmly.

Although it is not shown, it is hinted that Kierra has a friendship with students such as Clementine Galbraith and is particularly close to her and Lara Derbyshire.

The Surgeon stories:

The Yeti Factor:

Kierra is first shown at the Kirk of the Canongate with the other five students that are left at the Kirkyard alongside other women and men who are resistance fighters. Of the students at the Canongate, five remain because of the twelve students, Eleanor Davidson and Clarissa Wainwright are in the hands of the Great Intelligence and the rest of the group have been at Greyfriar's Kirkyard and have fought the Robot Yeti with their own Yetis.

Once Abigail introduces her right hand girl to the Eleventh Surgeon and Ghazal Rashidi, Kierra becomes the first girl to be introduced to the pair in exactly the same way that Abigail Huntsman introduced her own group at Edinburgh Castle. After some time in her own group, Kierra's group merges with Abigail's which is increased even further when the girls are dismissed and allowed to socialize with others.

When the Surgeon, Ghazal, Abigail and Amelia return to the Kirk of the Canongate Amelia orders the girls to rally where Kierra rallies to attention alongside the others. Like her friends, Kierra shows delight when the Surgeon announces he is going to help the resistance but when she sees him take control, her face falls.

Once Abigail has chosen Hester Cartridge to join the Surgeon, Kierra is chosen by Amelia to help the Surgeon and like Hester gives out a very confident stride when she joins the Surgeon's side. After the students are dismissed, the Surgeon asks where the two students were last seen and it is Kierra who replies that she last saw the students at the bottom of the Outlook Tower. With this information, the Surgeon begins his journey there.

At the tower, the Surgeon dismisses the girls but they refuse to leave him with Kierra being especially vocal in opposing him. It is also Kierra that makes the Surgeon give in and ultimately allow the girls to enter the Outlook Tower with him; even if the Tower is the hideout of Earth's master the Great Intelligence.

In the Tower, the group search the Camera Obscura for both the Great Intelligence and the two students in its grasp. And already, Kierra finds one student in the Intelligence's grasp: Eleanor Davidson and it is Kierra who alerts the Surgeon and Hester to Eleanor, the latter of whom does take notice of Kierra but takes more notice of Hester.

As Kierra and Hester un-tie Eleanor, a gun cocks in the shadows which brings the group to attention of the second student in the Intelligence's grasp: Clarissa Wainwright. With Hester, Kierra is held prisoner but when the Surgeon does not care about being held hostage by Clarissa she expresses a huge amount of frustration commenting to Hester:

"Why he doesn't feel threatened, I have no idea. How do you have a gun pointed at you and just be like; "What's up? You're holding me at gunpoint? That's fine. I'm okay with that?""
But the Surgeon is actually playing a very smart game with Clarissa; Until she arrived to hold the group hostage, the Surgeon had ordered the girls to untie Eleanor but by the time Clarissa arrived only Eleanor's legs were untied which allows her to give a very powerful kick at Clarissa's stomach. In the process, Kierra and Hester are ordered to continue untying Eleanor and while the former two girls hold Clarissa down, Eleanor ties her hands behind her back.

A bound Clarissa is then handed over to Kierra and Hester, both of whom are ordered to take her away to the Kirk of the Canongate. At the Kirkyard, Kierra tells Abigail that the Surgeon told them to go up to the Camera Obscura with a number of Yetis.

She also tells Ghazal Rashidi that the Surgeon is safe for the moment but does not tell her that the Surgeon mentioned anything about Ghazal. But Kierra comes to learn everything during the final battle: The Surgeon ordered the girls to come up to the building to fight the Intelligence then once he would hand Eleanor over, Ghazal would also be handed over. What she doesn't know however, is that the Surgeon gets Ghazal and abandons the girls to the Great Intelligence.

The Mammal Wars:

Return to Buckinghamshire:

Kierra returns in The Mammal Wars where she is no longer a student and instead acts as a criminal. The name of her original group is also changed to "Britain's Angels" all of whom have the ambition to integrate into the Vixen criminal organization or rather its British branch and become Vixens themselves, like the Romanian sisterhood in the East.

She first appears with the rest of her gang at the Buckinghamshire New University in the events hall, a building that has been abandoned a month prior to the events of The Mammal Wars and like the rest of the Angels, listens attentively to what her leader is telling them; unlike Felicity Barbrige however who is distracted by the sound of whooping and two shadowy figures, Kierra remains focused.

That is, until the whoops start to get more louder and frequent at which point, the Angels become slowly scared and think that the source of the whooping is coming for them. In High Wycombe, the Angels as well as the whole of Buckinghamshire ignore the warning to stay at home and instead come out in the open to see "Superfox" as their children call him.

But it's also here where the Angels and most of Buckinghamshire see more of the whooping animal; they see that it has a sloping spine which makes it out to be some kind of hyena, but that's it. The only other thing that the animal receives is a name, courtesy of Felicity Barbrige who names it "Jomnune".

The Angels are forced to watch another animal appear: The Shadow Cat as Clementine Galbraith calls it but what Felicity Barbrige calls Vlaasarak who actually goes to fight Jomnune alongside Seslinian. Once the fight goes to Sheephouse Wood, Abigail declares that the Angels will expand even with the threat of The Mammal Wars.

Outback Vixen:

Along with the rest of the Angels, Kierra is forced undercover by a combination of Jomnune and the British government who have activated Operation Temperer which has deployed 2,550 armed police officials on the streets all over the United Kingdom, forcing not only the Angels undercover but the organization which they wish to integrate themselves into: The British Vixens.

Despite this though, the Angels are still determined not to let this stop their expansion and during a speech made by her leader, she takes her place in front of Abigail with the rest of the Angels and cheers as Abigail makes the declaration of:

"I promised that the Angels would get an expansion, and Abigail has always kept her promises. Jomnune may have forced police onto the streets but he hasn't taken away our freedom and if we are to get into the Vixens then we have to be brave. This time, neither soldier nor hyena will prevent us from expanding! And that is not a promise but it is something that will happen!"
During the night, the Angels capture eleven teenage girls to be used as Angels and Felicity is leading a group to get one more; that girl is Charlotte Burton. However, Felicity's behavior results in a number of issues: Her team does not trust her and also, thanks to the presence of four animals in the form of Seslinian, a Siberian Tiger she names Kaulos, the figure of Jomnune and a Tasmanian Devil that was previously sighted in Leeds.

The Siege of Sheephouse Wood:

Following on from Outback Vixen, Kierra remains as part of the Angels where she is first seen in the Buckinghamshire New University gym in front of a projection of the face of Claribel Bloodworth, the now leader of the British Vixen branch, having previously served in the military in The Super Soldiers.

Now as part of the Angels, Claribel orders Hastings to reveal her captive which Wainwright does when she unmasks the Angels' ninth prisoner Nicole Hodges.
