Eleanor Davidson is a character from the Surgeon stories. She is a member of a group of students who join forces with the resistance fighting against the Great Intelligence and ultimately becomes its first victim. Alongside her fellow students, Eleanor is the first original character made for the Surgeon stories (not counting Ghazal Rashidi) because there are no other original supporting characters in the previous three stories.
As well as being the first original character for the Surgeon stories, Eleanor returns with her fellow students in The Mammal Wars.
She is an 18 year old British student with fair skin, a fairly slender build and brown hair and eyes. Because Eleanor is in an resistance group which is based on the streets she wears dark blue running tights, a white T-shirt, a grey top, white trainer socks and white Nike Roshe running trainers, at least in her first appearance.
In The Mammal Wars, Eleanor keeps this attire but instead of trainers wears black boots and a black leather jacket.
Like many other women in literature, Eleanor is shown to be very defiant and headstrong owing to the fact she is part of a resistance group and this is further demonstrated at the beginning of The Yeti Factor when she treats the Great Intelligence with particular contempt.
She is also shown struggling with the Intelligence's servants, but once in captivity it all changes because she now appears to be fearful on being tortured by one of her own allies who is described as her closest friend Clarissa Wainwright.
However, Eleanor has some masochistic tendencies because when Clarissa whips her groin she is heard moaning as if she likes receiving the torture but her enjoyable moans die down when Clarissa becomes more aggressive.
The Surgeon stories:
At the beginning of the story, Eleanor is first seen being dragged through the streets of Edinburgh under the captivity of shadowy servants of the Great Intelligence and is mentioned by even being frogmarched to the Camera Obscura which is the Intelligence's headquarters.
In the building, Eleanor is forced to sit down and when she tries to escape the servants of the Intelligence tie her legs together and force her onto the chair, even tying her onto the chair. A helpless Eleanor is now interrogated by the Intelligence who proceeds to give up and bring in Clarissa Wainwright who whips her groin and tortures her in the Intelligence's place.
Eventually, Eleanor is too strong for Clarissa so she is left alone in the Camera Obscura...until she is found by the Eleventh Surgeon with the aid of Hester Cartridge and Kierra Hastings who are assumed to be two of her friends. The latter finds her tied to a chair in the Camera Obscura but at first Eleanor does not pay any attention to Kierra and instead focuses on Hester. As she is being released, a gun cocks in the shadows.
The owner of the shadows finally comes forward: Clarissa Wainwright. However, as Clarissa threatens the Surgeon and his accomplices he tricks her into coming near Eleanor whose legs have been untied and as such Davidson kicks Wainwright in the stomach knocking the gun out of her hand and onto her stomach; once Eleanor's hands have been untied she uses the rope that was once used around her wrists to tie Clarissa's.
After Clarissa has been dragged away by Hester and Kierra, The Surgeon promises to help her out of the Camera Obscura but Eleanor is confused as to how a single person could ever take a planet back from an alien invader; the Surgeon however, does not reply.
Despite his promises to take Eleanor away from the Great Intelligence, the Surgeon actually takes her closer to it and it is here where the Intelligence becomes even more arrogant than ever claiming that the Human Factor that has been impregnated in so many Yetis is in fact useless to combat it. It finally delivers the killer blow by telling the Surgeon that it wants him to take the Yeti Factor and spread it through the entire history of Earth so humanity will obey the Intelligence.
Having listened to the Intelligence's gloating, the Surgeon tells Eleanor to run away but the pair engage in a heated argument in which the Surgeon tells her to go to the Outlook Tower but she refuses because she thinks that if the Surgeon sends her back to the Tower, he is effectively sending her to prison again.
The Surgeon is actually sending her to the Outlook Tower because it has a telescope and he is asking her to look inside it. When she does, Eleanor is stunned to learn the resistance coming up to the Camera Obscura and is believed to apologize for her actions. Once Eleanor sees the students come up to the Camera Obscura, she wants to leave but the Surgeon tells her to stay where she is which ultimately pays off:
The instant the students make it to the Outlook Tower, the Surgeon hands Eleanor over to the students and flees with Ghazal which means the resistance is effectively abandoned to destroy the Intelligence which it does.
Eleanor returns in The Mammal Wars where she is no longer a student or prisoner of a villain and instead acts as a criminal. The name of her original group is also changed to "Britain's Angels" all of whom have the ambition to integrate into the Vixen criminal organization or rather its British branch and become Vixens themselves, like the Romanian sisterhood in the East.
She first appears with the rest of her gang at the Buckinghamshire New University in the events hall, a building that has been abandoned a month prior to the events of The Mammal Wars and like the rest of the Angels, listens attentively to what her leader is telling them; unlike Felicity Barbrige however who is distracted by the sound of whooping and two shadowy figures, Eleanor remains focused.
That is, until the whoops start to get more louder and frequent at which point, the Angels become slowly scared and think that the source of the whooping is coming for them. In High Wycombe, the Angels as well as the whole of Buckinghamshire ignore the warning to stay at home and instead come out in the open to see "Superfox" as their children call him.
But it's also here where the Angels and most of Buckinghamshire see more of the whooping animal; they see that it has a sloping spine which makes it out to be some kind of hyena, but that's it. The only other thing that the animal receives is a name, courtesy of Felicity Barbrige who names it "Jomnune".
After the Angels watch the fight between Seslinian and Vlaasarak against Jomnune, they retreat to their hideout at the Buckinghamshire New University where Eleanor expresses fear about being unable to expand the Angels yet Abigail displays no concern about doing so and insists they will do it but will have to do it at the right time; i.e. at night because Jomnune may be back during the day.
Along with the rest of the Angels, Eleanor is forced undercover by a combination of Jomnune and the British government who have activated Operation Temperer which has deployed 2,550 armed police officials on the streets all over the United Kingdom, forcing not only the Angels undercover but the organization which they wish to integrate themselves into: The British Vixens.
Despite this though, the Angels are still determined not to let this stop their expansion and during a speech made by her leader, she takes her place in front of Abigail with the rest of the Angels and cheers as Abigail makes the declaration of:
"I promised that the Angels would get an expansion, and Abigail has always kept her promises. Jomnune may have forced police onto the streets but he hasn't taken away our freedom and if we are to get into the Vixens then we have to be brave. This time, neither soldier nor hyena will prevent us from expanding! And that is not a promise but it is something that will happen!"
Following on from Outback Vixen, Eleanor remains as part of the Angels where she is first seen in the Buckinghamshire New University gym in front of a projection of the face of Claribel Bloodworth, the now leader of the British Vixen branch, having previously served in the military in The Super Soldiers.
Now as part of the Angels, Claribel orders Eleanor to reveal her captive which Davidson does when she unmasks the Angels' sixth prisoner Amelia Davis.
